Progesterone and pregnancy

Hello Affiliate

"KW" has a question about pregnancy...

"I have been using Natpro cream for 2 years. I apply it twice per
day on day 14 of my cycle until the start of menstruation. I was
prescribed it for PMS. I intend to try for a baby and wonder if I
should discontinue using the cream while trying to become pregnant?"

My reply...

"Dear K, I'm so glad the cream has been helping you with the PMS.
Progesterone is wonderful for pregnancy, after all it is the
pregnancy hormone. So it is really up to you, but it can only be
beneficial. I will attach a chapter from Dr Dalton's book about
progesterone and pregnancy, and hopefully you'll be able to make an
informed opinion about whether to use it or not. One thing I'd ask
you to do if you want to have a baby, is please start taking now
(if you're not already) Omega 3 fish oil, folic acid, plus a
vitamin B complex. The foetus needs huge amounts of Omega 3 for
optimal brain development. If it doesn't get enough, then your
brain is robbed of what it needs. It's a known fact that the
mother's brain shrinks during pregnancy if enough of the essential
fatty acids are not eaten. They've also connected a lack of Omega
3 in foetal development to ADHD, dyslexia and dyspraxia. Folic acid
of course prevents spina bifida from forming. Do hope I've been of
some help. Please come back to me if you have any more questions."

"KW" has more questions this time about morning sickness...

"Thanks so much for your message. I read the two attachments with
interest. I wonder if you could advise me as to how much
progesterone I should take. Currently I apply about a quarter of a
teaspoon twice per day on day 14 of my cycle until menstruation
begins. I will be 39 in two week's time and have had one pregnancy
before which ended in miscarriage two years ago. I am planning to
try for a baby now. During the first pregnancy I was not taking
progesterone at the time and suffered horrendous morning sickness.
I wonder if I should perhaps increase the dose? Thank you also for
the advice regarding Omega 3. I am vegetarian but for some time
now have been taking cod liver oil. I think I will start taking
Omega 3 (hemp oil and flaxseed) as well as Folic Acid and B Complex
as you advise. Thanks again for your help"

And here's my answer...

"Dear K, I'm glad I was of help. If you had morning sickness,
that's an indication of a lack of progesterone, as you probably
read in Dr Dalton's chapter on pregnancy. So I would suggest you
start increasing the dose to about 5ml/day (1 teaspoon). Keep
using it according to your cycle, until you know you're pregnant,
then use the same amount every day without a break.

We've just helped a girl who during her previous pregnancy had
morning sickness for 7 months! The progesterone level increases
enormously in the last 2 months, which is why she didn't have it at
the end. Now she's pregnant again and the MS was very bad. I
advised her to start using 2 teaspoons/day to get rid of it, as it
had already become so bad. Well I'm pleased to say that it has now
gone.

I'm concerned to hear that you're vegetarian, as there's plenty of
evidence that vegetarian mothers don't have enough Omega 3 in their
blood for the developing foetus. As you're already taking cod
liver oil, maybe you'd consider taking fish oil, rather than the
flax oil? If the body is stressed, (and pregnancy is stressful) we
can't convert enough of the vegetable Omega 3 into the longer chain
EPA and DHA, which the foetus needs. DHA in particular is very
important for the developing brain. Studies have been done using a
DHA extract from algae, making it suitable for vegetarians, but
have found it didn't have the same benefits as the fish oil. The
thinking is the body also needs EPA which is not present in the
algae version. I'm glad you're going to take the folic acid too,
although that is usually not a problem for vegetarians, but it's
worth it for the sake of the foetus! And please try and keep your
stress levels down.

I had five miscarriages before having my daughter at the age of 33.
And recalling all of them, a stressful event occurred just prior
to having each one. One was precipitated by a dog fight, where I
had to separate the dogs! The miscarriage occurred later that
evening.

The first 3-4 months is really critical, so keep the progesterone
levels really high then, after that the placenta takes over, so the
risk isn't as great. But as you seem prone to them and the morning
sickness, I would suggest you keep using the cream throughout the
pregnancy. You'll have a very intelligent child!! Please let me
know how you get on and how the pregnancy develops, it's always so
helpful to me, I can then help others! And please remember I'm
always here to answer questions."

Till next time.
