Is Progesterone safe?

Hello Affiliate

MT writes...

"I got your details from L after I sent her a query from one of my
customers regarding the safety of use of the Natpro (or other
progesterone creams for that matter). Thank you in advance for
taking the time to answer my query. My customer has had a
hysterectomy a few years ago and was advised against HRT by her
doctor for various reasons. She has also been diagnosed with
calcifications in her one breast. She is excited about using
progesterone cream after reading up on it, but was just not sure if
it would be okay for her to use it because of the aforementioned
medical history. Please can you advise accordingly?"

I reply...

"Dear M, I'm relieved your customers doc advised against the HRT,
the risks are too great to use it! And the progesterone is fine, no
adverse side affects, bar those when first starting. I would
suggest she starts with about 2.5ml/day, and to use it
continuously. It's perfectly safe to do so, it's only mimicking
pregnancy, when we make up to 50 times the amount of progesterone,
compared to our monthly cycle.

To begin with she might experience adverse symptoms which are:
nausea, mild depression, headaches, migraines, weight gain due to
water retention, tiredness, breast tenderness. This is caused by
progesterone activating the estrogen receptors, which in turn
causes the "estrogen dominance" symptoms above. Some women
experience it, others not at all. It's extremely safe to use, so
play around with the dose, she might find that the 2.5ml/day is not
enough to begin with.

I've listed some of the symptoms which can be caused by a
progesterone deficiency...

agitation, aggression, anger, anxiety-internal, outwardly calm,
backache, particularly premenstrually, binges, brown patches on
cheeks, brown spots on backs of hands, easily upset, quick to cry,
depression (worse at puberty, childbirth and menopause), fatigue,
excessive body hair on women, headaches, hypoglycaemia,
infertility/difficulty in falling pregnant, insecure, insomnia,
irrational fears, lack of self confidence and esteem, lethargy,
libido-low, loneliness, memory-poor and short term loss, menstrual
problems, irregular flow etc, migraines, mood swings, miscarriages,
period pains and/or ovulation cramps, pre-eclampsia,
procrastination, rebellious, early aging of skin, spaced out,
stress upsets emotional balance, suicidal thoughts or attempts,
tension, weight gain at puberty, childbirth and menopause

Progesterone is the most amazing hormone. I have papers on how it
prevents ovarian cancer, breast cancer, stress induced miscarriages
and pre-term birth. Emory University have been studying it for 20
years now and they have just announced in January this year that
they've found it helps in traumatic brain injury, they believe it
should help a stroke victim and someone with MS, and will be
carrying out studies on these. If you should like any of the above
papers I can send them to you. I've also attached a few on
hysterectomy. Do hope this helps. Please come back to me if you
have any more questions"

MT responds...

"Thank you so much for the fabulous reply. I have sent it on to my
customer and am sure she'll be just as happy with what you say. I
am still new to the whole progesterone scene, but am encouraged by
what L has told me and because of what I can read in your e-mail -
I'm quite excited by all its possibilities!"

And I answer...

"Dear M, Bless you for your kind words! I've been excited about
progesterone for 10 years now, after it helped me out of a bad
depression (plus 38 other awful symptoms!) at the onset of
peri-menopause. Do hope it helps your customer. And any time you
need help, advice, more info, please come back to me. When I first
started talking about progesterone, I was often confronted by
doctors saying there's no research on it and that it's a scam (some
still say this!). At that time there was no fast connection to the
internet so searching was difficult, now that there is I feel
overwhelmed by all the research!

For instance putting into Google Scholar 'progesterone and

hysterectomy' it came up with 8,940 research papers! The other day
I put in 'progesterone and stress' and there were 25,800 papers!
Not in a life time could I possibly get through them all. I think
the thing to remember is that progesterone is the oldest hormone
known, some authorities say 500 million years old, so our fat based
steroids are all 'descended' from it. Without progesterone we
wouldn't have estrogen, testosterone, cortisol and cortisone and a
whole host of others.

I've been thinking about the calcification of your customers breast
and feel her calcium/magnesium ratio is out of balance. Calcium
usually gets deposited in soft tissue if not enough magnesium is
present. She could have a hair analysis done to confirm this."

This is the last in a series of messages that I've been sending you
since you completed the progesterone deficiency questionnaire. If you
found them of value and would like to continue receiving information
from time to time on progesterone therapy and related health matters
then please subscribe to my newsletter if you haven't already done

Progesterone and miscarriage

Hello Affiliate

C writes...

"Please could you tell me were to get progesterone as I think it
would help me I am just after having another miscarriage at 6
weeks, this is my fifth please help."

My reply...

"Dear C, Many thanks for your email. The progesterone will help you
with your miscarriages, I will attach info for you on it. It's
most important to start using it before you fall pregnant and once
you are, not to stop taking it, until at least four months have
passed, better to stay on it to the end though. As you've already
had five miscarriages I would recommend that you use about 5ml of
cream per day until the fourth month, when you could reduce it
slowly to 2.5ml/day.

If at any time you should feel nauseous, then increase the amount
till it passes. Above all please avoid any stress, as this causes
miscarriages. The reason for this is that progesterone levels drop
during any stressful period, which can precipitate a miscarriage.
Before you fall pregnant and continuing whilst you are, please
consider taking a vitamin B complex and Omega 3 fish oil. The
fetus requires large amounts of Omega 3, and if enough is not
supplied ADD can be a result. The mother also suffers as the fetus
gets preference over her. Please come back to me if you have any
more questions or concerns"

Progesterone and weight gain

Hello Affiliate

MJ writes...

"I have just ordered the progesterone for fatigue, depression,
always feeling cold etc. etc. What I was also wondering was if the
lack of progesterone is what caused me to gain 20 lbs?"

And here's my reply...

"Dear M, Many thanks for your email. It could be a lack of
progesterone which caused you to put on the weight. Progesterone
directly influences two crucial matters relating to weight gain:
blood sugar levels and water retention.

Looking at your symptoms it could well be that your thyroid needs
checking on too."

Progesterone and hypothyroidism

Hello Affiliate

SB writes...

"I am looking into HRT for hypothyroidism. Currently I am on
synthroid with no changes to my symptoms. After reading your
material, I am wondering about the yam extract. On first page the
material states that progesterone cannot be made from the yam
extract. On another page it states that progesterone is being made
from diosgenin, which is the plant extract. Could you clarify? I
am about to start a new treatment through the fybromyalgia and
fatigue centers. Thank you."

I reply...

"Dear S, Many thanks for your email. I'm interested to hear that
the Synthroid has made no change to your symptoms. I am attaching
a scanned chapter from Julia Ross's excellent book 'Mood Cures'
about the thyroid and about tests which should be done but aren't
normally. She also has a questionnaire in the chapter. Hopefully
this might help you. Some authorities have found that T4
(Synthroid) is not converted by the body into T3, the active
hormone, and unless this happens symptoms will persist. At the end
of the chapter I have given her contact details, should you wish
for them.

It could well be that your symptoms aren't related to thyroid
problems but to a lack of progesterone as they do overlap, or
possibly both. In case you haven't seen the symptoms list on our
web site I'm attaching it here for you to go over.

I'm a bit puzzled about your comment: "on first page the material
states that progesterone cannot be made from the yam extract. On
another page it states that progesterone is being made from
diosgenin, which is the plant extract."

I can't see where the reference is to: 'progesterone cannot be
made from the yam extract'. This is what I've found: "It was not
until 1943 that Russell Marker made it from the plant steroid
diosgenin. Originally he used the Mexican wild yam (dioscorea
villosa) as a source plant. However, diosgenin has now been found
in many other plants, including the spice fenugreek and the soya
bean. Once it was established that it could be produced like this
biochemists began converting it into other hormones. These include
cortisone, testosterone, estrogen and of course the "unnatural"
progestins or progestogens."

Our cream contains progesterone, made from disogenin, which is
extracted from the soya bean. It does not contain diosgenin,
commonly known as yam extract. The body cannot convert diosgenin
into progesterone. I do hope this makes it clearer.

If you have the time, I would love to know what your symptoms are,
maybe I could help you further. If you're going to the fybromyalgia
and fatigue centers, it sounds like you have pain and chronic
fatigue too, am I right? You might like to contact the Clinics and

Progesterone and cysts and PCO

Hello Affiliate

CV writes...

"Hello, I'm 29 years old. I'm suffering from PCOS. I've been
taking the pill Diane for 6 years but the microcysts didn't go away
from my ovaries. I'd like to stop taking the pill but I'm afraid
that the problems that I had before I started taking the Diane will
appear again (such as amennorea, acne, hirsutism). I'd like to know
If the Natpro can help me, how much is shipping cost for my country.
Thanks, kind regards, C"

My reply...

"Dear C, Many thanks for your email. We have helped many women
with PCO, as progesterone helps both breast and ovarian cysts to be
re-absorbed into the body, whereas estrogen causes them to grow.
Two of the main symptoms of PCO are insulin resistance and high
androgens, so most doctors when confronted with PCO either give
their patients the Pill or put them on the diabetes drug Metformin.
The Pill to suppress the androgens and the Metformin to correct the
insulin resistance, but neither of them addresses the cause.

The Pill contains a synthetic version of progesterone (know as
"progestin"), which often has major side affects, one of them is to
cause depression by lowering your own natural progesterone level.
This can then cause estrogen dominance symptoms.

Have you had your progesterone level checked? And have you had a
homocysteine and d-Chiro-inositol blood test? All of these should
have been done as they all have a bearing on the problem.

Briefly, during the first half of our cycle follicle stimulating
hormone and estrogen cause the egg to mature, at mid cycle
lutenising hormone causes the follicle to burst and the egg is
released. The follicle, now called the corpus luteum, starts
producing progesterone. The first half of this cycle occurs in PCO
but the egg isn't released. A cyst forms instead, which means no
progesterone is made.

By supplementing with progesterone blood sugar problems are
corrected, the androgens are counteracted and the cysts are
absorbed back into the body. It takes time but eventually the
problems are resolved.

I once had an assistant, who when she joined me had severe PCO with
a 4cm ovarian cyst which her doctor had found by a scan and wanted
to remove surgically. Well after a month of progesterone the cyst
had completely gone. About a year later she had a child, which is
generally difficult with PCO. It's very important to avoid sugar
or anything which contains or is converted to sugar/glucose.
Glucose, when released into the blood, causes an insulin spike,
insulin causes androgens to be formed, which in turn causes acne. I
will attach some documents which I hope will help. Please come back
to me if you have any more questions."

Till next time.
