"I am looking into HRT for hypothyroidism. Currently I am on
synthroid with no changes to my symptoms. After reading your
material, I am wondering about the yam extract. On first page the
material states that progesterone cannot be made from the yam
extract. On another page it states that progesterone is being made
from diosgenin, which is the plant extract. Could you clarify? I
am about to start a new treatment through the fybromyalgia and
fatigue centers. Thank you."
I reply...
"Dear S, Many thanks for your email. I'm interested to hear that
the Synthroid has made no change to your symptoms. I am attaching
a scanned chapter from Julia Ross's excellent book 'Mood Cures'
about the thyroid and about tests which should be done but aren't
normally. She also has a questionnaire in the chapter. Hopefully
this might help you. Some authorities have found that T4
(Synthroid) is not converted by the body into T3, the active
hormone, and unless this happens symptoms will persist. At the end
of the chapter I have given her contact details, should you wish
for them.
It could well be that your symptoms aren't related to thyroid
problems but to a lack of progesterone as they do overlap, or
possibly both. In case you haven't seen the symptoms list on our
web site I'm attaching it here for you to go over.
I'm a bit puzzled about your comment: "on first page the material
states that progesterone cannot be made from the yam extract. On
another page it states that progesterone is being made from
diosgenin, which is the plant extract."
I can't see where the reference is to: 'progesterone cannot be
made from the yam extract'. This is what I've found: "It was not
until 1943 that Russell Marker made it from the plant steroid
diosgenin. Originally he used the Mexican wild yam (dioscorea
villosa) as a source plant. However, diosgenin has now been found
in many other plants, including the spice fenugreek and the soya
bean. Once it was established that it could be produced like this
biochemists began converting it into other hormones. These include
cortisone, testosterone, estrogen and of course the "unnatural"
progestins or progestogens."
Our cream contains progesterone, made from disogenin, which is
extracted from the soya bean. It does not contain diosgenin,
commonly known as yam extract. The body cannot convert diosgenin
into progesterone. I do hope this makes it clearer.
If you have the time, I would love to know what your symptoms are,
maybe I could help you further. If you're going to the fybromyalgia
and fatigue centers, it sounds like you have pain and chronic
fatigue too, am I right? You might like to contact the Clinics and
